UMBRIA

The wine route, the olive oil route and local products

As often happens with artists, the landscape, the traditions, the scents and flavours of Pintoricchio’s home region have left their mark on his paintings. On his palette could be found the scintillating colours of Umbria: the greens, the yellow that seems like a ‘golden green’, the ruby red colours of the fruit on the vines; these vivid images must have enchanted the artist from his infancy and followed him on his journey to Rome. Sensations, suggestive images and flavours can still be found in the shining green-silver hills of Umbria today, where there is a clear bond connecting man to the sacred plant: the extra virgin olive oil DOP Umbria.

Typical local produce is not only found in Perugia and Spello, the towns playing host to the Pintoricchio exhibition, but also in Città di Castello, Trevi, Spoleto, Orvieto, where works by the great painter can be admired in situ.
The leafy branches and centuries old trunks of the olive groves of Umbria still produce delicacies of a refined taste based on an authentic simplicity, such as the precious white and black truffles, wild mushrooms, Trasimeno beans, the red Colforito Potato, Castelluccio lentils, the Cannara onions and the Trevi black celery.
Amongst the local delicacies of Umbria, in addition to the Chianina beef and the celebrated lamb, a special place must also be reserved for the pork products. For decades the Costano Porchetta has conquered dining tables, while salumi and prosciuto from Norcia and the Valnerina is famous all over the world.
Ancestral scents and flavours, developed into simple yet delicious peasant cuisine, seasoned with extra virgin olive oil and accompanied by great wines.
Three territories in the region are particularly recognised for the standard of their viticulture: the legendary Orvieto, homeland to white wines celebrated and loved by Popes and emperors; Torgiano, that put Umbria on the enological world map; and Montefalco, home to red wines of a notable structure and personality, such as the Sagrantino.
